Software Architecture
As per Wikipedia, Software Architecture is “the fundamental structures of a software system and the discipline of creating such structures and systems. Each structure comprises software elements, relations among them, and properties of both elements and relations. The architecture of a software system is a metaphor, analogous to the architecture of a building. It functions as a blueprint for the system and the developing project, laying out the tasks necessary to be executed by the design teams.”
One of the best definitions of Software Architecture and its components is from IEEE Standard 1471-2000, which is also known as IEEE 1471. A Software Architecture involves below elements:
- System
- Mission
- Environment
- Stakeholders
- Relationships
Software Architect
Software Architect is an experienced software developer who creates high-level software design considerations according to the prevailing standards. The role a Software Architect plays is critical as he/she converts features and characteristics of software requirements into a structured and integrated solution which aligns with corporate goals and strategy.
Types of Software Architects
There are different types of Software Architects whose role is divided into different layers of the corporate and technical hierarchy.
- Systems Architect – Systems architects define the architecture of a computerized system (i.e., a system composed of software and hardware) in order to fulfill certain requirements. Such definitions include a breakdown of the system into components, the component interactions and interfaces (including with the environment, especially the user), and the technologies and resources to be used in its design and implementation. - Solution Architect – A Solution Architect’s task is to assess business requirements and provide technical solutions to the problem statement. they work with multiple other architects, development teams, and stakeholders to provide the technical solution.
- Enterprise Architect – defines the technology roadmap and architecture vision of the complete company as a whole. These architects work with different technical teams to review, enforce enterprise architecture and design in all the technical implementations.
- Application Architect – works on the architecture and design of the application. Application Architect works on the detailed architecture, design and is also involved in the actual implementation of the application development.
Steps to Become a Software Architect
This is how I became a Software Architect. I started as Software Trainee, then Software Engineer, Senior Software Engineer, Technical Specialist, Team Lead and then Software Architect. I have worked as Application Architect as well as Solution Architect.
The clear and easy steps to become Software Architect are:
- Start with Computer Science Degree/Self-taught experience in Computer Science/Programming
- Work as a Developer/Software Engineer
- Work on detailed and low-level application design
- Gain experience in multiple technology stacks
- Gain experience in converting business requirements into technical requirements
- Gain experience in stakeholder communication
- Move to architecture of applications, and then architecture of software solutions
In the step to becoming Software Architect, you will also learn different abstract design patterns and practices. Also, you will have to learn constantly emerging new technology stacks.
